You have a great idea for a business? Fantastic!
Good ideas are easy. Having a start-up is hard. Really hard.
Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Sara Blakely are household names. For every unicorn founder there are thousands of people who had a big idea and failed, and dozens more who experienced modest success. I am one of these people – an upstart.
My name is Kara, I am a recovering founder, marketing and business planning strategist, university administrator, and MFA in creative non-fiction candidate. Thanks for stopping by!
This website is for start-up groupies, disaster tourists, business enthusiasts, anyone who has had a start-up (successful or otherwise), and aspiring founders who want to learn from the experiences of others.
I am working on a book inspired by own experiences in the start-up ecosystem. Upstarts: Founders, Failure and the Start-Up Paradox (working title) explores our conceptions of success and failure through conversations with founders who didn’t have the outcome they expected, unpacking why they took a risk and what they learned.
